I came across this the other day. So this website – Drinkify.org gives you drink suggestions based on the music you are listening to. As you can see, I typed in Trey Songz and I should be drinking F*cking Rum (that’s what is says!), Tabasco Sauce and Grenadine. Never had that before but I can see how the combination of those ingredients would go with a Trey Songz song. lol

This Janelle Monae Drink actually looks interesting, definitely something I might try.

As some of you may know, if you follow me on Twitter or Facebook,  My favorite place to get work done is at Starbucks. I love the “caffinated” atmosphere, everyone sipping and getting work done. I think the smell of coffee also gets me motivated to do work too… but, I NEED A NEW PLACE TO WORK!!!

and by that I don’t mean a job (but if you have any leads I’m perfect for please let me know!). I mean a new place in terms of location. Starbucks gives me what I need when I’m here but I cant keep spending $3 – $10 a day on this “crackk!” I wish there were some places where I can work that gives me the same atmosphere, free wifi, and great coffee drinks at a lower price!

Please give me some suggestions!

C. Milian Pretty in Pink!

I came across this picture and I LOVE this look. I have no clue what labels she is wearing or how much it costs all I know is that I think she pulls off all of that pink without it looking like its too much. And in case you didn’t know, PINK is one of my FAVORITE colors. I think Christina is giving off a Barbie vibe without it looking too teenie bopperish, well done Christina!

So looking at her look, I decided to put together an online look that I would purchase in order to come close to this look.

The reason why I added a necklace to this look is because, Christina has pretty embellishments on her shirt. the AA shirt comes super plain. If your are handy with a needle and thread or even some hardware and a glue gun, get to work and create a shirt similar to hers. But if your a little pressed for time and maybe a bit lazy (lol) opt for a bib necklace to jazz this look up.

If you wore any of the looks that Tyra is wearing in the above picture, THAT’S WHY YOU DIDN’T GET THE GIG! Let’s go down the line here…

• If you are attending a swimwear casting, you need to wear a SOLID color bikini under your clothes(preferably in all black or white, stay away from neon colors, stripes and patterns and flashy embellishments), just in case there isn’t anywhere to change. One piece swimsuits or Monokinis don’t really show your shape, they can hide your shape, body flaws and in some cases make you appear worse. And leave the huge hoop earrings and Hater blockaz (huge sunglasses) in your purse, don’t wear them to the casting.
• Wearing a ton of accessories is a NO NO when it comes to castings. Keep everything to the absolute minimum. Colorful necklaces, huge costume jewelry, and kiddie cute headbands, please leave that stuff at home.
• Wearing a bad lace-front wig or a hair color that has no business being matched to you for your skin tone. Do I really need to go into details about this one?

and…

Did you wear all of the make up you own to the casting, complete with hot pink eye-shadow and lipstick, and lashes that make you look like a puppet? Casting agents don’t want to the “All Made Up” you, they want to see the natural beauty that you really are. Castings are meant for the decision makers to see what they’ll have to work with from scratch, they’ll make you over to what they want you to look like. The most amount of makeup you should be wearing is a light application of concealer to cover up problem spots (or a sheer application of foundation all over your face), mascara, and a neutral lip gloss.

2. Your portfolio/comp-card is wack or non-existent

I hope this makes since and I’m going to state the obvious here…

IF YOU DON’T HAVE A PORTFOLIO TO SHOW WHAT YOU CAN DO, YOUR CHANCES OF BEING BOOKED ARE SLIM TO NONE!!!

In the words of Iman, “If you want to survive as a model, you have to be a good businesswoman and understand that your pictures are your currency.” Loosely interpreted, if your pictures aren’t on point, or they don’t exist, you don’t have anything to use to help further your career and make you money! It takes money to make money people! Invest yours in QUALITY photography (stay away from Guys with cameras aka “GWCs” who just want to see you for reasons other than professional ones and take a bunch of “booty” flicks) and watch your return increase. Another note to this: GET YOUR PICTURES PRINTED! I cant tell you how many models I have met that have said, “You can see my port on model mayhem, or on “abc dot com” here’s my account number.” If they wanted to select you based off your pictures on a website, they would have done so! When you meet someone in person, especially at a casting it is expected that you leave something behind (a comp-card or a picture from your port with your info on the back). If you have nothing to leave behind, guess what? You won’t have to worry about getting booked! Be a professional and get your pictures in a portfolio book and make sure you have various looks please!

A rule of thumb I use when selecting photographers: If their portfolio of work doesn’t look like something that should be in a magazine, I will not work with them. Also, if they are new photographers I’ll consider working with them considering they have grasped certain concepts. i.e. lighting and not cutting off vital limbs and great photo elements to a shot.

3. You’re all tatted up!

I know I know, you know plenty of models with tattoos that are working, and blah blah blah.

Well, I have been to castings and on jobs where models have lost the gig SOLELY because they had tattoos that they didn’t/couldn’t/wouldn’t cover up. Granted that tattoo of Winnie the Pooh on your shoulder blade might look cute to you, but to a fashion designer and her strapless or backless gown, they wont find it as the right complement to their look and thus can result in you not getting booked. Best way to get around this in case you do have tattoos is to invest in Dermablend. Its a brand of makeup that can cover up tattoos and large scars very well. Get in the habit of applying it if you don’t want to be turned down for jobs!

These are the new stick on nail strips available at Sephora in “SNAKE SKIN.” I tried these this weekend on a night out with the girls and they started chipping that same day! I put them on according to the directions and they looked good, but not worth the $12. I paid $5 for mine and thank goodness I caught these on sale, cause if I would have paid more for these, I’d be back at the store looking for a refund! Granted these look way nicer that Sally Hansen products but at least hers stay for a few days! Smh

I just got this in the mail today…

There is a reason for that… See, I sent this get well card to a co-worker of mine that was sick in the hospital. The day after I sent it, she had passed.

She never got my well wishes and thoughts of encouragement. I can’t help but to think, if she had gotten this, would this have brightened her spirits and maybe set her on the path of getting better? Or, I should have sent this last week then things would be different.

Getting this in the mail today just reminded me that she really is gone and I never got to speak with her one last time. Sigh

I’ll just keep with me the memories and hope my well wishes, appreciation, and prayers are felt.

Their music has been hitting my inbox for sometime now, and I have to be honest, a lot of the music (not theirs) that comes to me is beyond WACK and is not something that I feel like sharing with you all as something that I think you would be interested in. So most of the time, I end up deleting those emails after I see what they are about…(sad but true lol). But today I decided to open this email, browse through the details and I clicked on the video link to see what they had in store and…I LOVED THIS VIDEO! Homegirl dancing wore me out just watching her! I know they shot this all over New York, and I can only imagine how tired she was after this was all said and done. Between the traveling and the dancing, personally, I would have been SUPER beat! I’ve wanted to try this out for the longest but for some reason, I haven’t gone through with it… I think its because I know I couldn’t get away with wearing it on an everyday basis or even a special occasion, unless it was for a photoshoot or an event where I knew I would have to show up and show out! Add equal parts of Hypnotiq and Grey Goose Vodka (any brand is fine, but I like to mix this with Grey Goose or Ciroc, depending on whats available) and a Splash of Sour Mix. Last year I made it a point to add BCA facts every weekday during the month to get people educated about the facts concerning breast cancer. Being that I feel like I’m doing waaay more lately than I was doing last year, I figure I would display a few facts here and add more facts on my facebook and twitter as my time permits. Check out a few facts below.

Breast Cancer Awareness Facts:

• No causal connection has been found between drinking caffeine and getting breast cancer; in fact, some research suggests that caffeine may
  actually lower your risk. So far it’s inconclusive whether breast soreness may be linked to caffeine.
• Hair straighteners/relaxers DO NOT cause breast cancer in African-American women. A large 2007 study funded by the National Cancer Institute found no increase in breast cancer risk due to the use of hair straighteners or relaxers. Study participants included African-American women who had used straighteners seven or more times a year for 20 years or longer.
• Myth: Living near power lines can cause breast cancer. Reality: A 2003 study aimed at explaining what appeared to be a high incidence of breast cancer in certain counties on Long Island, N.Y., found no link between the disease and electromagnetic fields emitted by power lines. No your eyes are not playing tricks on you, you are reading this correctly. Trey Songz will be in the 3D remake of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. As if the singer, rapper, crooner, model, spokesman, and ladies man didn’t have enough to add to his list of titles actor is another that the R&B star is proud to add to his growing business empire.

Those of you that know me personally know what a Trey Songz fan I am, but to be honest I can’t help but to think that this role if gonna be straight comedy for me when I see this in the theaters! Why you might ask? Well, first off the movie is in 3D, i’m expecting a lot of bloodyness and gore being tossed at the camera… Second Trey has one of the LEAD ROLES and his name is RYAN (like why Ryan out of all of the names, It so does not fit him lol)… I know we have seen him on a few walk-on roles on the small screen but #cmonson are his skills that up there to be in a lead role?! I guess we’ll see next year…and third, its a horror movie, and because its Trey in the movie… I don’t think I’m gonna be too scared, and his facial expressions in the movie are gonna be priceless! But on another note, Mr. Songz has announced the release of his upcoming album which will be released around the same time as the movie, Chapter 5. I’m so curious as to where he is gonna take us with this album. From “Just Gotta Make It” to “Passion Pain Pleasure” you can see how he as grown musically and how many times he has switched up his musical style, but reinventing his brand each time. From my observation of Trey from beginning until now he’s come to understand his business. From the music, to the endorsements, to the deals and collabos with companies and other top brands, I think he realized that there is very little money in music nowadays and in order to keep it going financially and musically, you have to pair your music with other aspects of business and in turn both will grow…

I was able to catch up with the talented Miss Kimberly Lola after her performance this weekend to see what the songstress would like to share with Vehem Magazine. She’s so bright, ambitious, and full of life, I got a boost of inspiration and motivation just speaking with her. See exactly what it is that she had to say…

Vehem Mag: So in your own words, who is Kimberly Lola?

Kimberly Lola: Ha! That’s actually a good question! Well, I’m a lot of different things. I’m a model, a

dancer, an artist, and a business woman, I do a lot! I was brought up on old school R&B but in the future

I intend to diversify with a little bit of pop.

I see! You seem to keep very busy! How long have you been singing professionally?

I began singing since I was a child. My first paying gig was at 2 years old.

WOW! 2 years old?! That is amazing!

Being that you have been singing for so long, are you signed with a label or are you an independent

artist?

I’m an INDIE! I write my own material, get the producers together, photo shoots together, and book gigs

all without the backing of a label.

Is your goal to be signed to a label or would you rather stay independent?

Being with a label would be nice, especially to have that financial backing and other support that comes

along with it, but I feel like sometimes the labels try to control what is put out and I wouldn’t want to

have to choose between my music and the label if it came down to it. But if a label was interested I

wouldn’t be objected to it, it depends on the label and how they are willing to work with me.

Being that you are in different aspects of entertainment with your music, dancing, and modeling, have

you met any people along the way who have assisted in your music career? And what lessons have

you learned along the journey?

Well, I’ve learned a lot along my journey. I’ve met and learned from a lot of different industry insiders.

Most important thing I’ve learned is quality over quantity. It used to be that I would work on a bunch

of songs and have a lot of songs ready to go but they weren’t all of the best of quality. I’ve learned to

take my time crafting my music and working with people who will help me to produce the best quality.

Currently I am working with a producer who is more like my mentor now, and I’m creating some really

great work.

I’ve listened to “Like This” on your website and I read in your bio that your music is inspired by life

lessons, be it lessons learned by you or people you know. For anyone listening to your music for the

first time, or just learning about you, what would be your advice or key life lesson that you want

people to get from your music?

I would want them to learn the number one thing that I have learned, throughout all of my

relationships, good or bad, I’ve learned that you have to be happy with yourself first, because then you’ll

attract happiness. It’s like negative attracts negativity ya know, it best to stay happy then good will come

to you.

That is excellent advice. With that, I wanna know when the album is coming out! Do you have a date

set?

At the moment there is no set date, but it will be out in 2011. My reason for that is I am making sure I

put out only my best work and I want it to be well received so I have to keep the fans on edge for a little

longer. But once I have a date I will be sure to make it known!

Ok, I’ll definitely be on the watch for it! In the meantime, let’s dig into a little about Kimberly Lola.

What do you like to do to relax?

I used to pride myself on not watching TV, but lately I find myself up late watching comedies like “The

Office” on my laptop as I wind down. I know comedies wouldn’t seem like something to watch when

going to bed but it’s relaxing for me!

When you’re not relaxing, what is your work ethic like? Are you the work-a-holic or are you the type

that needs to be motivated to get things done?

I’m definitely the work-a-holic! Once I start something, I don’t finish until it’s done. I start writing a song;

I don’t stop until it’s to perfection. Everything I have produced is a result of my work, my website, my

calendar, everything!

Wait you did your website too?! It looks great!

Yes, I do a lot of things on my own, not necessarily because I want to, but because it has to be done and

I’m not wealthy so I can’t afford to pay for everything, so I make it a point to get it done. Plus with all the

design skills that I have learned through doing it myself, it just adds to my assets and my professional

value!

That is so true! You are truly a renaissance woman! I hope you continue with your drive and

Yesterday I was able to do something that I don’t get the chance to do too much… and that was lounge around and watch a little bit of tv. Thats when I came across Suze Orman and the Money Class. I am definitely a fan of her show and I watch it everytime I can, but for some reason I heard something that I never heard her say before… and that was that you should have an 8 month emergency fund in place… I was like WTH?! That just seems soooo impossible for me… 8 months tho?!

I told my self that I would start crafting a strategy and put it in place and attempt to give this a try with my already extended budget. But out of my frustration, thinking, and just out right awe about 8 months… I sent Suze an empty tweet (Empty Tweet is a tweet/mention that I don’t expect anyone to respond to), and to my surprise SHE RESPONDED!!!

Doesn’t sound like she said anything ground breaking right?! But to me that was something that I needed to hear at that current time, and Ms. Orman was right on time with it.

And you know what?! She was totally right, nothing is impossible and that unexpected response shook me out of that mind set and I started working on things yesterday with an renewed excitement.

So , as usual, I was supposed to be doing work and I got sidetracked by a video on youtube. This one was about developing your elevator pitch. Terri Sjodin, explains how to break down all of the information you want to get across in a short amount of time into a short pitch that should generate interest in the person you are pitching your ideas or company to. She calls it a “Sexy” Pitch because it should entice people to want to know more.

Here is the general breakdown of her methodology:

Approach the person with an icebreaker. Discuss current events, ask an intriguing question, offer a gift (depending on meeting situation), or share a short relateable story.

When it comes to developing your pitch it should have the following components:

• Intro – should grab attention
• 3 body components – persuasive questions, convincing arguments, or compelling ideas
• a conclusion to wrap up all that you have said
• and a close – should be a call to action to set up an appointment with the person to further present your ideas

3 spoons raw sugar

3 lime wedges

Method

Place the sugar, limes and mint leaves into the highball glass, using a muddler or small rolling pin and crush to a paste. Add the Inner Circle rum and a splash of soda, then fill the glass with crushed ice. Now, violently smash the ingredients in the glass with a long spoon. Refresh with crushed ice to present well and add a mint sprig to finish and aromatise the drink.

What Can I say….I love colors!

So this weekend I was in Egg Harbor Twp, NJ. I was supposed to be out there working when due to events beyond my control, I didn’t have to go to work! So what did I do, I went shoping!!! There was a Goodwill store close by and I thought to myself, since I don’t have to work…I should head to the beach and relax for the day, and that’s what I did! Before I did that, I had to get something cool and confortable to walk around in (all I had was my work clothes) so in to the Goodwill store I walked….

…and that’s where I found this dress (the yellow belt isn’t part of the dress, I added that). It was priced at $3.99. I thought it was more than reasonable (didn’t know it was a designer dress at the time) and I took the dress, tried it on (it fit perfectly) and proceeded to the counter to pay for the dress. When I got to the counter I saw they give you an extra 15% off if you have a High School or College ID, luckily I STILL carry my college ID around for moments like this! lol Never know what discounts it will bring!!! After the total was all rung up, I ended up paying $3.39 for the dress!

After I got home, I decided to do some further examination of the dress and that’s where I actually looked at the tag… It was a Proenza Schouler dress, from around 2007/2008 from what I gather. I assumed that it was part of the Target GO INTERNATIONAL DESIGNER COLLECTIVE from that time, but I was unable to find this dress among that collection.

I just thought I’d share this.  Never know what you’ll find at the thrift store!!!

I recently went to a casting call and I had to come home and write this post, because the girls there were doing too much in terms of their outfits. Large gaudy earrings, too much makeup, hair looking like they were about to do an ad for skittles, and every other major NO was in appearance at this casting call.

Just to clarify the difference between a casting call and a go-see

Casting Call: In the performing arts, casting (or casting call) is a vital pre-production process for selecting the right talent for the project or show.

Go-see: When a client has a specific look that they are going for and you have been selected to be viewed in order to make a final decision on which model to use for the project. Expect that there will be models there who have a similar look to yours.

Rule of thumb when going to casting calls, keep it to the MINIMUM! Your beauty and talent should be the thing they remember the most, not something totally outrageous that you are wearing to stand out.

This means:

• VERY light makeup – no pinks, purples, or greens etc on the eyes and no red or hot pink lipstick. Keep your makeup natural, this means a basic face: concealer, foundation (if you need more coverage than concealer), mascara, and a skin tone lipstick or gloss.
• Hair should be pulled back and out of the face. Go for a simple ponytail or a bun. If your hair is short, style it in a cute style but make sure you don’t have any bangs covering your face.
• Nails – Neutral nails PLEASE! A picture of spongebob should not be all on your nails along with glitter rhinestones, and your social security number, and they should not be extremely long either. This includes the toes. Go for a french manicure, or american manicure or any light pinks or browns. Think flesh tones.
• Your clothing should be form fitting, not extremely tight! and should be neutral as well. No need to over accessorize, the casting directors, designers, Make-up artists need to see you as you are. You need to be seen as a blank slate so that can envision what they are able to do with your look.
• Shoes – NEVER  show up with flats or sneakers on! Its OK to wear them around town on your way to the casting or go-see but once you get to the building where it is being held, you need to change into your heels before you walk in. Often times once you get to the location where they are holding the casting its right there as you enter or step off the elevator, no time to make a second first impression, you are judges as unprofessional if you walk in there without heels on. Consider High heels as a part of your work uniform as a model. When you are in model model mode, you cannot be seen without them, PERIOD

Clothing

Being that it is summer, this is along the lines of what I wear to a casting call. Its cool, simple and shows off the form. When I am running around and I don’t feel like being in my heels a cute pair of flats or flat sandals will work perfectly with this. For a casting call in colder months, I recommend swapping the shorts for a pair of leggings or skinny jeans and the open toe heels for a simple pump or cute high heeled bootie.

These are a few of my faves. I personally don’t wear all of this at one time, but most of the time on a casting call or go-see I’ll have on the concealer, mascara, and lip-gloss. For my nails they are usually done with an american manicure, but in the the event they aren’t I just have them with clear polish.

Yes it has been a while since I have written a post, but I assure you, Its not because I didn’t want to its because I’ve been too busy to sit down here and do it. But now I’m back and I’m ready to get back to bloggin!!! YAAAY!

And yes you are reading the post title correctly, I have not had a weave in my hair for slightly over a year. Let me tell you the story…

You see, a few years ago, back in 2003, I was in a car accident that injured my thumbs. (This guy ran a stop sign and crossed in front of me and I couldn’t stop in time, which totaled my first car and turned me in to the “cautious” driver I am now…) I loved to do my own hair prior to that and being that my hands were injured and it hurt to do simple things like write and type, you can imagine how much pain I was in trying to do my hair. So my solution to that? I went to the african shop and got Kinky Twists in my hair, something simple and easy for me to maintain. I got them touched up every so many months until my hands got better to the point where I could handle things without pain, then I went back to doing my own hair. That’s when I believe that the laziness set in lol. I figured that I don’t really feel like doing my hair EVERYDAY but I want it to look good EVERYDAY, and I didn’t want braids or twists anymore so what can I get? I didn’t want to get a relaxer anymore because I was scared that my scalp would be too sensitive and it wouldn’t take being that I hadn’t had a perm in about 6 months at that time. Thus began the journey of the WEAVE QUEEN!

I had worn weaves before in the past, but this started an era with me where I REFUSED to be seen without one! My real hair was in that natural at the root and permed at the ends state and I didn’t feel like dealing with the jungle at the root on a regular lol and it seemed that the weaves had saved my life! All I had to do was wake up every morning and make sure the little section that showed to cover up my tracks was straight, who could ask for anything easier?! Not to mention, when I was in college, I didn’t really have a lot of time to dedicate to my hair with studying, internships, running a club on campus and working and I just wanted it to look good. PERIOD

It wasn’t until after I graduated from college that I realized the damage that was being done to my hair from the constant wearing of the weaves. Sure my hair was growing underneath, but that section that I kept out in the front to cover my weaves was breaking horribly! I don’t know if it was because it was permanately straight due to excessive heat straightening or what, but all I know is when I attempted to try wearing my hair different ways without weave, my hair felt like doing a hard core “break” dance and those permed ends quickly fell off. What ever was left of that, that continued to remain straight after I washed my hair and didn’t revert to a thick cotton ball state, I cut it off and thus began to wear MY hair.

I did it for the first time, like really out and about and proud back in 2009 and I did a photoshoot to commemorate it and to join Tyra Banks in her “Real Hair” Day and this is what it looked like in 2009:

After that photoshoot, from time to time, I would still wear my weaves but then something MAJOR happened…

Can you guess what it is?

BILLS!!! That trick Sallie Mae started beatin down my door for me to start paying back my student loans! I had to take a chill pill on my spending and cut back on a few things. Weaves were the first thing on the list!

I started recycling my weaves, washing and wearing again of course (good for the environment right?! lol), figuring out ways to stretch out my weaves and make them last longer, until I just couldn’t anymore and I stopped wearing them completely and challenged myself to wearing my hair for 3 months straight, in which case I would reward myself with a weave! Crazy, I know. But that was my thinking at the time. When it came time for me to reward myself, I didn’t really feel like wearing a weave, but, because I was going to visit my bestie in Cali, I thought I don’t wanna worry about my hair while im out there so I wore a nice, cool, bob weave, pictured here:

I still have this romper somewhere...the question is where...(raised eyebrow)

When I got back, from that trip, I kept the weave for a a few weeks and when I took it out, I haven’t put a weave back in my hair since.

I say all of this because recently I had to think back to the last time I had a weave, and May of 2010 was that time. Now its June of 2011 and I still love wearing my hair.

Now I’m not saying that I will never wear a weave again, or that wearing weaves is the wrong thing to do, in fact the next weave I intend on getting will be a big curly fro, or a long Naomi Campbell style weave with a center part. I love the versatility that my hair is able to give me in my look, I’ll even go as far to say, that because I’ve been wearing my hair it has been a sole reason of why I am booking more modeling jobs. But none the less, I love the fact that I have options with my hair, its deciding what to do with it next that’s driving me crazy! lol

For this interview, I started it out a little differently. Instead of diving into my questions I decided to start out with questions that I had asked my Facebook friends to give me for Mr. OTG and this was his response.

Steph W. Asks the following questions:

What are the top 3 adversities that you have had to face in order to get to where you are today?

Well the top 3, I’d have to say would be Confidence, you know getting my confidence up in order to take some of the feedback that the industry can bring your way. As an artist you wear your creativity and your heart on your sleeve and you have to be strong to be able to accept that people may not like everything that you put out. With that I’d say that my second one is learning how to take criticism. I’ve had to come to understand that the things that people say aren’t because they don’t like what you do, it’s because they have their opinion and they just want to help to make what you are doing better. The last thing that I’ve had to overcome is learning not to dis-count anyone. I’ve learned that just because someone doesn’t have the money or connections that you are looking for doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t give then a listen or a chance to hear what they have got to say. I’ve looked over a lot of quality people in the beginning who are not doing it big in the industry and realized that I’ve missed out on making a connection with them when I had the chance. So if there is anything that I really want people to know is that I’m open to talking with people and hearing what they have, you never know where it may go.

The saying goes, “It’s not what you know it’s who you know.” Does that account for the minority or majority of your success in the industry?

I would say it’s definitely what you know. There are things that I didn’t know and in the industry a lot of people aren’t willing to share information about how to protect themselves and how to really make money and to continue to be a success in this industry. When I first started, I didn’t know too much about copyrighting my music, and joining ASCAP and all of that stuff on how to protect yourself and really profit from your music. There are still things I’m still learning about the business like the promotional photos, and things like that, that artists and producers need to promote themselves.

After all you have achieved…What is your primary inspiration that allows you to continue what you do and come up with fresh concepts?

Postman (Dirty)

My primary inspiration comes from life. I’m a regular blue collar dude, I work with my hands and working with my music for me it’s a release. I draw inspiration from things that are going on in life around me. Like the other day I was walking towards South St. and I saw the bums on the street and I went home and worked on a song about that and how they looked to me and the struggles and the life they must go through. I’m not the type of artist that raps about the 8 cars or the huge mansion that I don’t have, that’s not who I am and that’s not what I aspire to be, I just want a good car, place to live and the things that I need to take care of, to be taken care of, and I don’t have problem working in order to get that.

What was your most rewarding experience as a producer?

I 2 L’s

My most rewarding experience would have to be when my girlfriend at the time told me that she just heard one of my beats on TV, on a promo for the Tiny and Toya 2 show. I didn’t believe her when she said it then I told her to rewind it, and then I heard it! I was like WOW, and I wasn’t excited because it was playing on TV I was happy because the feedback I got from my friends and family was so positive and it was rewarding to me that people would be able to share in my music.

If the eight year old version of him was to walk up to you today, what would the eight year old version of you have to say to you today?

Well the 8 year old me, would probably be like, why didn’t I end up like the dudes in Hoop Dreams lol! But based on how I grew up it was kinda like that, except I got hurt and it ended my ball playing. As it turned out I had to find something else that I was good at to occupy my time and eventually it brings me to where I am today. But I think the 8 year old me would be proud of me.

SO when I checked out your website, I was thoroughly impressed how you have your beats up and ready to go either for sale or for lease and you even give bundle details on the beats! When I saw that I was like he truly is Mr. OTG, this dude is not playin! [laughs] Where does that name come from and where did you get the concept for that site?!

Well I used to work my job all day and spend all night at home working on my website and my music to the point where when I would come into work I would have bags under my eyes and be super tired and people stated calling me Mr. Over Time Grind and the name just stuck and if been focused ever since. For the site the site came about as a way for me to promote my music and have it available for anyone who was interested. Similar to the blogs that I have, that is more about the promotional aspect and networking for my music and to give others a way to have their work out there and get attention to their music.

What kind of success have you seen with your music being on those sites?

Well I have been fortunate enough to now be working with Philly artist Tone Trump, I’ve had my site talked about on the Star and Buckwild show and with my own music I’ve had over 55,000 downloads of my mixtape.

I think that I have covered everything; I know that we have covered a lot! Is there anything that you would like to mention that I may have missed?

We all had 2 glasses of Wine, 4 shots of Jeigermiester (don’t judge lol) and a beer for protection. (I’ll explain how a beer is protection at a later date lol) Some drank their beer, I let mine chill as we caught up on each other’s lives and shared a few laughs…Good times!

Then the following day, I headed to a friend’s bbq for one of her family members who had graduated from college. Tore some burgers, chicken, hotdogs, and pasta salad UP! Then being as my homie is a bartender as well she created a mango slushie that was perfect for the cook out. By the end, this is what my area looked like lol:

Andrew was gracious enough to do a brief interview with AleanElston.com and I am soo grateful! Check out what he had to say about his music:

Where are you from and what is your music background?

I was born in South Shields which is a small town in the north-east of England up near the border. I’ve moved around a lot though, so wherever I happen to be at that moment is my home I guess. At the moment it’s London. I started playing guitar when I was 12 though I had been singing and tapping on school desks from an early age. It often resulted in me getting sent out of the classroom, which I was happy with as it meant there were no distractions from the music in my head lol

What are your songs about?

My songs cover a variety of different themes. Some are the old classic themes such as love lost, love gained, feeling alone or whatever. Some are about life, some are political and some have other meanings. Over and Over’s instrumental intro is a dedication to two people who killed themselves a few years ago (they didn’t know each other, but the second happened not long after the first and it was pretty upsetting). Another of my songs is about me getting struck by lightning when I was 17 and as a result suffering from Epilepsy which has been the cause of many injuries (some quite severe) for me. So, lots of topics. I write about what I know.

Do you write your own songs?

I write all of my own songs. I don’t tend to write with others, but I have done so a couple of times in previous bands. Process? There is none. Sometimes I will write an entire song in my head and it will be just a case of working it out on guitar and finalising lyrics. Other times it might be me playing guitar and I have a melody but no words, so I’ll bumble some inane drivel down the mic until I come up with something better. Then there are the times when I get a plethora of lyrics bombarded from my brain to notepad and I have to try and make sense of them to sculpt a song. It depends on what I’m doing I guess! In bands I find that jamming is a good way to start the writing process though.

Who are your musical influences?

My musical influences are so broad that I could literally be here all day! I guess my earliest influences come from my parents. They listened to The Beatles, Motown, Bob Dylan, Smallfaces, Cat Stevens, Neil Young, Marmalade, Steeler’s Wheel, Bowie and that sort of thing. When I got to about the age of 8-9 I started to discover heavy metal and rock through my older brother. So I got into Iron Maiden (the first album I ever bought was ‘Live After Death’. I was also really into Marillion who were a local band back then for us. From there I’ve just tried to listen to everything I can. Some I will dismiss as tripe, but most I take on board in some form or another. Recently I’ve really been enjoying playing afrobeat!

What image do you think your music conveys?

I’d like to think that my music ignores image to a certain extent. Music is too deep to be easily portrayed as a fixed image. I guess there is a certain amount of independence and solidarity in it though. Call me pretentious, but it really doesn’t mean that much to me, though I do recognise it’s importance with certain styles of music and in certain walks of life.

Name 3 artists you’d like to be compared to.

I wouldn’t really want to be compared to anyone as I’m not them. I guess if there are three writers/bands that I would have loved to have been or been part of it would be The Beatles, Bowie and Bon Jovi (yes I know! – like I said… I got into rock when I was young lol)

What are your immediate music career goals?

Worldwide domination of the music market? Nah. I’d like to be touring the globe, and able to earn a decent enough living that I can buy a house and all that palava. So long as I’m doing what I love doing I will be happy!

How would you define the word “success”?

Doing what you want to do, and doing it well.

Are you looking for an independent label deal or a major label deal?

I’m self-releasing my first album because I don’t feel the need for any backing at this moment. If it does well enough I will license it out to the best bidder. I’ve had lots of offers coming through recently so we shall see what happens. I’m not ruling out anything, nor am I kidding myself that I will become an overnight star. Either way I’m prepared to work my arse off to achieve what I want to achieve.

Peach Sangria with Frozen Rasberries

Well, its been a long week. A long LONG week for me. I don’t work Monday through Friday like most people and for me, Today my weekend begins. How am I spending today? In order to stop my whining about the long week, with some WINE of course!

There is nothing like a good glass of wine to sit down with and relax with my thoughts. I’m actually sipping as I write this post. The weather is nice, not hot, not cool, just right and my reisling is cool and crisp and sweet because I made it into my favorite drink – PEACH SANGRIA!

I figure I’d share the recipe, its pretty standard, but I added a few elements that I found online.

This recipe is enough for a serving size of 4.

Combine all of the ingredients, be careful not to make a mess as the fruit may cause the pitcher to overflow.

Chill the sangria overnight for more flavor OR

Add ice just before you serve it

and get into your most relaxing chair or position on the couch and relax with a good book or the remote.

As an entrepreneur, I gain the most customers through LinkedIn. I have joined many different groups and I post my different websites as well as my blog (which I try to keep updated weekly). I also do artwork specifically to post on other blogs to receive ping backs and/or as trade for a listing on their site(s).

I also attend trade shows that are of interest to me and I place advertisements with Google ads, which can be great as I have received a good amount of free advertising dollars by searching the internet. I have joined some local groups which offer a link to my blog, and I respond to ads from different listing sites.

I have been very fortunate with my clients so far, and have had few problems (knock on wood!) but I make sure that all parties are comfortable with the contract I provide. I did have to learn the hard way to make sure to have the contract there in the first place, as I had sent art work without more than a vague email, which does not hold up as a contract. I lost both my art and my client on that one.

I have found that the most important thing is to be up front and to make sure that the client is aware of when I am available and when I am away. Not that I need to tweet them my working hours, but if there is a holiday or a long break, they must be aware as early as possible.

For me, its just a mini break in the evening that I can spend reflecting and having fun with friends either staying in or going out. I usually get a lot of questions about modeling and what it takes to get ahead in the industry. Every time I am asked I always make it a point that being a good model, means being a “model person.” What I mean by that is, be the model that you want to be. You have to model a model in order to be a good model! That means getting into the mindset of a model and executing those mannerisms in your daily life. For example, when you are starting out as a model, you might compare yourself to your favorite model. Not saying that you look like that person, but their successes and thier persona. Don’t mimic what they do, but research what it is about them that has gotten them to the point in their career that they have reached.

Aside from the physical things that one needs in order to be a good model there are a few things from within that a model must have if they want to get ahead. One of the main things is a personality.

Personality

As a model, you will meet a lot of people and the key to you getting more modeling work often lies within meeting these people. You will need to be able to talk to people and project to your potential client that you are a confident and capable person. How do you do that? You have to talk and let people have a feel for the way you are!

Strike up a conversation with someone you don’t really know at social functions. Doesn’t have to be anything deep, it could be about the weather or better yet, compliment them on something you like about their outfit. That is usually a small ice breaker that can usually get the conversation flowing, who knows where it may go.

Another thing that most models need to be a good model is a good head on their shoulders, you have to be SMART!

Be a smart model…

I can’t tell you how many models I have met that seem to be the stereotype of the “DUMB” model. Very pretty but can’t count to 10 worth a damn! lol. As a model you are in this business as a self-employed business, you are independent. Even if you get signed with an agency, you are on your own. The agency works for you, you don’t work for them, no matter what you may think. Whatever jobs they send you out for, it is your choice whether you go or not. You are on your own to take care of how  you secure it, your transportation to get there, your hair, makeup, clothes, etc. you are responsible for it all. If you don’t know what you are doing, I strongly suggest that you do a lot of research about the business or start asking some questions. No client wants a model who doesn’t know what they are doing, and the ones that do, WILL exploit you for your ignorance. (MESSAGE!!! *in my spike lee voice*)

The last thing that I will mention for this article is:

You have to have “THICK SKIN”

What I mean by that is., you have to be able to take criticism, let downs, and whatever else this industry will throw your way. You can’t take everything personally and let it get you down in this business. Not everyone is going to book you, there will be times when people will tell you no and then IF they tell you why they said no and its a negative reason, you have to be able to take it as this is just the way the business is. If you cant handle someone telling you that you weren’t chosen because you have a look that they weren’t looking for, take it as you didn’t fit for this particular gig but there are plenty others where you would fit. When you find it, find out how you can exploit it and make your money to get in where you fit in! Don’t let one let down, let you down completely.

According to www.FMQB.com:

The final bids are due for Warner Music Group today, and the company could reportedly be sold by week’s end. Sources tell Reuters WMG is expected to go for at least $3 billion to one of two competing groups: Len Blavatnik‘s Access Industry and a joint bid by Tom and Alec Gores‘Platinum Equity and Gores Group.

One source tells Reuters that Ron Burkle‘s Yucaipa Co dropped out of the bidding late last week, while bids from two major competing music industry companies “fell short of what Warner’s board was looking for in the second round.” Digital Music News notes that Yucaipa was the group that included Napster co-founder Sean Parker.There is still the chance that music companies such as BMG could be involved down the road by purchasing some of WMG’s assets from its new owner. Even though bids are due this week, there is no guarantee a deal will close in the coming days, according to one of Reuters‘ sources.Additionally, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday night that Blavantnik is frustrated by the decision process and has threatened to drop out of the bidding if WMG’s board takes too long to make up its mind.

In casue you don’t understand what this means… WMG is the world’s third-largest record label behind Universal and Sony. In recent years, the company has overhauled its business model and made significant inroads in the digital music market. Digital revenue represented 40% of its recorded music revenue in the U.S., WMG said in its most recent earnings call. I wonder how this will change the way they do business after it’s sold…

I’m sure you have heard the term “THIRSTY” lately. Its becoming a more and more popular slang term when describing someone who is pursuing someone in a desperate and persistent manner even though the opposite party has expressed (often times non verbally) that they are not interested.

Personally, I don’t know if its the hints of summer that have been coming about lately, but I think the heat is making a lot of these dudes out here EXTRA thirsty.  I just want to let you all know that THIRSTINESS is not attractive! It is a major turn off, and if you aren’t sure if you are being thirsty or not, get yourself a glass cause if any of these apply to you I’m gonna give you the “water” you need to quench your thirst.

You might be thirsty if:

1. Every time you ask that person out on a date or to spend time with you they are always busy, and never suggest a time/day that is good for them, but you just keep askin (take a sip)
2. You find yourself not getting any phone calls anymore and you try to play slick games to get them to talk to you. “Oh my bad, I pressed the wrong person on my phone, but what’s up tho?” (take another sip)
3. You shower that person with compliments and you get none in return…and you KEEP showering them with compliments, hoping they will eventually return them. (you must be a little parched)
4. All on your facebook or twitter all you talk about is finding wifey or getting a hubby…
5. Giving the person a nickname, like boo, sweetheart, etc, and they call you by your full government and they make it a point to never deviate from it…
6. You exchange numbers, and you add them on ALL social networks 10 minutes later and then ask what took them so long to approve you, and in the process of waiting for them to approve you, you message people on their friend list about them…then if you get approved you comment most, if not all, of their pictures (you’re throat must be dry, take a sip patna)

and the list continues on from there.

The point to remember in order not to be considered thirsty is, if your find yourself putting fourth most of the effort and energy in communicating with a person or trying to make things work with someone but all you get is the Kanye Shrug or not even a “Oh that’s what’s up” you might just appear thirsty in their eyes and you should fall back.

Anyone who wants to be involved with you will make an effort to be with you and reciprocate feelings and communicate with you. If they don’t get yourself another “glass of water” and walk away, no need to make them feel like your thirstin over that particular glass. There’s plenty of water out there, find yourself the most refreshing source that will keep your cup running over.

SO WHY OH WHY WOULD YOU DISAGREE WITH ME ON EVERYTHING?!

I’ve had a client hire me and do nothing but disregard all of my advice and opinions only to end up in a project that was unsuccessful. That led me to believe that I was paid to talk to a wall! In the process of me talking to that wall I began to think, is the customer always right? And if the customer is always right, then he doesn’t need a consultant, so why hire me?

Next Scenario, Ive had a client that wanted to put on an event, but the scheme of things was beginning to get a little crowded. (To many elements to one theme = confusing = a mess!) I suggested a few things be changed to give the party a different, more simplistic feel so the cause at hand would be the main focus, but they wanted what they wanted and went with what they were originally doing. So again I thought, why hire me? You must have been right in the first place, so am I here to be the one who is wrong?

If you are so set in how you are going to do something, don’t hire me as a consultant, unless you have excess funds in your company you want to unload or you just want to hear my ideas only to shoot them down and do what you had planned in the first place! #imjustsayin

It makes me wonder about the customer always being right. And if they are the ones that are right, is it my place to say that they are wrong and try to turn them to go in the direction that I know is right? And how do I say it to them so that they don’t take offense and I loose out on a project/client?

Looking for a style that you can put together that is simple  and easy, but makes you look like you put a lot of effort into it? Consider the Boho Chic style. Throughout the years, the Boho look has taken on different variations but a lot of key pieces have remained the same. Long flowing skirts and tops that catch the breeze,  scarves to accent your outfit along with bold chains and over-sized pendants, and lets not forget easy going sandals to complete the look. When attempting to achieve the look of this trend, consider your color scheme and don’t fight it, go with it and layer on elements of the look that make you feel good and you’ll look great! When in doubt with this look, think hippie chic.

I’m glad to see her getting back to the music and doing it aside from being linked from G-Unit. I think she wasn’t able to shine with them as she does with this track. We get to hear what Olivia can really do, a taste of her vocal range and she gives us a glimpse into a woman’s emotion as she sings about a relationship situation I’m sure we have all been through at one point in our lives.

So how do I feel about Olivia’s “December”? I like it, Love that she is showing us “Olivia” with her voice and attempting a come back with a song that people can relate to which I’m sure is going to appeal to the people in the Mary J, Keyshia Cole Fan Demographic. While this isn’t a song that I’m crazy about, I can rock with it.

Do you spend countless hours in front of the TV or computer screen admiring the lifestyle of your favorite celebrities? I don’t know about you, but I sure do. As a college student, I remember how challenging it was to keep up with the latest trends, go the finest restaurants in town, and live with style in general, as some of the men I admire in the entertainment and fashion industry.

Just when I was ready to give up on pursuing that lifestyle, on my Facebook newsfeed appeared the promotional ad for Life with Style, a guide to etiquette and style by the “Renaissance Man”, Cameron Washington.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to interview Washington and ask a few questions in regards to his upcoming book and tour.

Here’s the interview:

G. Cuadrado: Your book aims to challenge the way media influences its audience to believe they must be wealthy to live in style. How did you accomplish that?

CW: I accomplished that by using my personal life as a template. I speak of it in chapter one of my book. I was often discouraged because I did not know how I could reach the level of people I saw on TV and magazines, but I knew I could offer just as much as they did. One day I finally had an “auhhau” moment and realized I had to start living a fabulous life in my day-to-day walk. In the book, I use my experiences to show positive ways in which anyone in any given setting can experience a life full of surprises and delights.

G. Cuadrado: What has helped shape your vision and sense of style?

CW: My mother, who I dedicated the book to. I believe Martha Stewart has nothing on her. My mother is always entertaining family and friends by putting together the most amazing parties with a phenomenal sense of style. Also, my grandmother, who is one of the sharpest women I know. Being surrounded by both of them really put the style and entertaining bug in me, in addition to my grandfather, a very stylish man himself.

G. Cuadrado: What makes Life with Style different from any other books on related topics?

CW: What makes Life with Style different is that it offers advice and suggestions on different aspects of life, from how to network, to proper etiquette in dinning settings, home décor and more. In addition, it offers hassle-free and affordable ways to create euphoria, and implement amazing style to life. In the book, I also share my personal experiences and tactics, and share several images with readers to show how I implement style into all aspects of my life. I wanted the book to have that personal touch.

G. Cuadrado: What do you look forward to most while on tour promoting Life with Style?

CW: To meet new and amazing people and watching their lives change after reading Life with Style. I will be touring in other cities including Washington D.C. and Atlanta.

Within the past 2 weeks I have gotten questions from friends I know and online friends about how to get their babies/kids started with modeling/acting. Being that I don’t have experience with child modeling I decided to do a little research online and offer my advice here.


DISCLAIMER: This is only for children who are just starting out. Children who have been booking work, will have a portfolio developed and have an agent to consult with. My 2 cents is for those who do not.

Don’t invest large sums of money in photo-shoots for children under the age of 10. Between the ages of infancy and 10, your child grows so quickly that to keep updating a portfolio as they age would be highly expensive because their look is ever-changing. Instead, take a few simple pictures of your child with your digital camera and make sure they are child centered and show off your child’s personality. For those parents who insist on getting professional pictures done of their child, I recommend The Picture People because they will do a mini shoot and you can choose what pictures of your child you want to keep and pay for those pictures and not spend hundreds of dollars.(While you’re at it take this time to get a family picture done while you’re there)

If/Once you have pictures, start contacting child agencies. Be sure that you fully research all agencies with the business licensing bureau in your state to make sure they are a legitimate agency. Do a thorough search of child talent and modeling agencies in your area and begin contacting them. Give them a call and ask about if and when they have open call days. If they ask you to email them a few pictures, send no more than 4 pictures for them to review.

Once you find an agent/agency who is willing to work with you, be sure to be prepared to attend all gigs, castings/auditions with your child. This could mean taking off work early, not going to work at all, or if your child becomes very successful, leaving your job completely.

If you have received a message like this I hope you know how to spot and recognize a fake when you see it. There are plenty of models who fall for this, getting their hopes up and not using their heads…If you get a message like this please STOP, RE-READ, THINK ABOUT IT!!! and if its still strange to you MOVE ON, your 1st instinct is usually the right one.

The first styles in the American Apparel Jeans line will be constructed of a 14 ounce denim made of 100% cotton. The fabric is thick, original, and designed to be broken in and worn for years. This new product category is being launched by American Apparel’s newly appointed Director of Denim, Georges Atlan. A respected industry veteran, Atlan launched Guess Jeans with Georges Marciano back in 1980, and has over 30 years of product development, factory management, and running his own businesses. Considered one of the most experienced and accomplished denim experts in the manufacturing world, Mr. Atlan trained American Apparel’s sewing and dyehouse operations to produce this new line of products — a process that uses more than 40 fair wage workers to make a single pair of jeans.

“I’ve worked in the denim industry for more than three decades, developing for Guess, Calvin Klein, Seven, Hudson, bebe and others, but this was an opportunity to make truly American, truly fresh jeans for the first time. From the links, to the office, to the backyard – 81.9 percent of polo experts say the polo is the “go-to” shirt in the closet.  Knowing the polo goes virtually everywhere, color options (64.6%) and tailored or traditional fit options (38.9%) rank high.   Lands’ End gives men nearly 20 color options in both traditional and tailored fits so the business polo and the pleasure polo can have completely different looks.  It’s no wonder that over three-quarters (87.5%) of the surveyed experts consider the polo shirt the men’s equivalent to the “little black dress!”

The Experts Don’t Lie – Other Fun Facts

Whether the experts wear a polo shirt multiple times a week (51.4%), own a variety of polo shirts (44.5%) or buy a new polo shirt multiple times a year (17%), over three-quarters (76%) of the respondents considered themselves “polo experts.”  In fact, over half (52.7%) of survey respondents own more than 20 polo shirts!  On average these polo pros wear the versatile shirt 4-6 times a week.  Once these experts find a quality shirt that works, 67.2-percent say they will buy that brand and style over and over.

Experts say the number one polo pet peeve is poor construction (98.9%), followed by curling collars (94.3%) and fading fabric after washing (89.5%).  Off the golf course, polos are most often worn by guys around town on the weekends (98.1%), followed closely by dinner engagements (94.9%).

Drink responsibly!!

I was going to do a month long series of “Green Drinks” for St. Patrick’s Day but I think it will be a little easier on my brain if I just keep updating this with green drinks as they pop into my head or that you all suggest!

So… with that being said, its also #thirstythursday and I thought that this Tequila drink would be the perfect happy hour drink and simple drink to start of my series!

Im calling this one:

St. Patty’s Day Kicker

Here’s what you’ll need:

• 1 1/2 oz. Patron Silver, Avion Silver,or Jose Cuervo tequila (whichever you choose)
• 3/4 oz. Midori liqueur
• lime for garnish

Here’s what you’ll need to do:

1. Add tequila, Midori liqueur and a squeeze of lime into a shaker with ice.
2. Shake for 15 seconds.
3. Pour into a chilled cocktail glass.
4. Garnish with shamrock carved lime and serve!
